Frequently Asked Questions

All the Answers to Your Questions

Welcome to the The Burrow Help Center. Below you will find a collection of some of the most frequently asked questions about our Rabbitry. However, if you still have additional questions after consulting our list of FAQs, then please get in touch directly and we will happy to answer any additional questions.

What do you feed your rabbits?

We feed our rabbits daily doses of Blue Seal Home Fresh Show Hutch Deluxe 17. We also treat them with Timothy hay from time to time and provide a continuous flow of water using an automatic watering system.

Where can I find more information about rabbits?

We have found that  http://threelittleladiesrabbitry.com/rabbitcolorgeneticsindex.php and https://thenaturetrail.com/rabbit-genetics/ are great resources to learn more about rabbit genetics. RabbitBreeders.us is also a great resource for directories, articles, etc.

What breed of rabbits do you raise?

We mainly raise Netherland Dwarf rabbits but are also raising some Thrianta rabbits now too. Our focus remains on the herd of Dwarfs though.

What do some of the terms you use mean?

-ARBA: American Rabbit Breeders Association

-ANDRC: American Netherland Dwarf Rabbit Club

-Doe: a female rabbit

-Junior Doe: a female rabbit who is less than 6 months old.

-Senior Doe: a female rabbit who is atleast 6 months old.

-Dam: the doe who was bred to the buck and who kindled the rabbits

-Proven Doe: a female rabbit who has had babies before

-Brood Doe: a female rabbit who does not fully meet the Standard of Perfection but is still useful in a breeding program.

-True dwarf: Netherland Dwarfs that instead of carrying one dwarf and one non-dwarf gene

-False dwarf or BUD/BUB: Big Ugly Does (BUDs) and Big Ugly Bucks (BUBs) are Netherland Dwarfs that instead of carrying one dwarf and one non-dwarf gene carry two non-dwarf gene and are therefore larger than true dwarfs.

-Buck: a male rabbit

-Junior Buck: a male rabbit who is less than 6 months old.

-Senior Buck: a male rabbit who is atleast 6 months old.

-Kindle: Giving birth

-Litter: a group of baby rabbits born to a doe at one time

-Kit: a baby rabbit

What are the different colors that Netherland Dwarfs come in?

Netherland Dwarfs come in many different "colors." When showing Netherland Dwarfs, the ARBA has them organized into five different Groups with several Varieties in each: Self, Shaded, Agouti, Tan Pattern, and Any Other Variety (AOV). Within each of these Groups, the following varieities can be shown:

SELF

-Ruby-Eyed White (REW)

-Blue-Eyed White (BEW)

-Black

-Blue

-Chocolate

-Lilac

SHADED

-Sable Point

-Siamese Sable

-Siamese Smoke Pearl

-Tortoise Shell (Black or Blue)

AGOUTI

-Chestnut

-Opal

-Chinchilla

-Squirrel

-Lynx

TAN PATTERN

-Tan (Black, Blue, Chocolate, or Lilac)

-Silver Marten (Black, Blue, Chocolate, or Lilac)

-Sable Marten

-Smoke Pearl Marten

-Otter (Black, Blue, Chocolate, or Lilac)

ANY OTHER VARIETY

-Himalayan (Black, Blue, Chocolate, or Lilac)

-Orange

-Fawn

-Steel

-Broken (Can be in any colors that are currently showable as a non-Broken color listed above)

If Red is a non-showable color and you breed to the Standard, then why do you raise that color rabbit?

That's a great question! Mainly because we love the color and desire for it to be a showable color in the future. In order for this to happen a Certificate of Development (COD) for this Variety must be filed with the ARBA. After a very lenghty process and, with the support of the ANDRC, Red may become a showable Variety. Until then, we continue to raise them according to the existing Standard of Perfection in hopes that our collaboration with other hard working breeders may result in Red becoming the newest Variety of showable Netherland Dwarfs.
